Metallica Unleashed
2009-06-16
WHAT A remarkable Metallica concert in Helsinki’s Hartwell Arena 14 June. The band was more alive then ever opening up with That Was Just Your Life, followed by The End of the Line, the first two tracks off the new album Death Magnetic.
Singer and guitarist James Hetfield comments that “what goes well with the new stuff … is the old stuff,” as he pounded the stage with electric presence and high powered energy. Kirk Hammett continues to prove that he’s more than just a thrasher - he’s an extremely talented musician as lead guitarist. This was the first time I’ve seen bassist Rob Trujillo performing in person, and he was equally impressive matching the intensity of Hetfield.
The metal band wouldn’t count without a drummer and what a drummer he is. Lars Ulrich, one of the founders and original members of Metallica, has been literally on the edge of his seat during the concert banging, clashing, whacking and trashing with the power of 1000 watts.
Metallica delivered sharp and melodic metal along with incredible energy that makes you want to slam and mosh. There’s nothing like a crowd that knows every word to every song. Hetfield repeatedly stepped back to let the crowd take over and take part in the making of music.
Metallica fans obsessively recognised every step, every song that connected with the electric energy emanating from the band. The beat pulsed through their bodies, the sound filling their souls as the band built up the atmosphere with innovative laser and lighting effects. Classic pieces like Sad But True, All Nightmare Long, Master of Puppets and Enter Sandman brought fans and artists alike into one metal family, one metal soul, one metal head.
Some personal highlights include Master of Puppets and a new track, The Day That Never Comes.
